That's a pretty much a rhetorical question.  I know what I NEED to do now, but what to actually do…

I ask become I’ve come off finishing a deadline and I’m feeling a little drained.  I deal with deadlines every month, but not one that is so close to what I really want to do.

I’ve cleaned, I’ve moved furniture around, done the food shopping, been to the comic shop, watched JOHN CARTER again, but now I need to throw myself back into work again.

I have two deadlines coming up, finishing an issue of VOODOO for DC (I oversee the art production of the issue as agent for Sami Basri and Jessica Kholinne of STELLAR Labs for DC Comics) and there is getting everything sorted for San Diego Comicon.

At San Diego I’ll be unveiling a lot more art and details for the new anthology title I am doing with Stellar Labs and my own company, ATOMEKA PRESS, called “A1”.  This is going to be a monthly comic with three strips in, CARPE DIEM, ODYSSEY and WEIRDING WILLOWS.  All strips will be ongoing and appearing most months.  When any of the strips takes a break we’re thinking about letting someone from DeviantART do a short story for those issues.  I’ll let you know how that shapes up as we get closer to the release date.

I’ll also be appearing on a couple of DEVIANTART panels during the show and a HEAVY METAL panel.  I’ll post details as soon as I have them.

Between those and meetings I’ll be down in Artists Alley.  Anyone have questions or thoughts about the industry that you want to discuss come and find me.  Happy to look through portfolios when I can.  Looking forward to meeting the 6 winners of the DeviantART scholarship program I judged.

But now, RIGHT NOW, I’m in belly button gazing mode.  Oh look, a piece of lint… Must pluck it out.

Truth is, this is the first time in a long, long time, I’ve actually been able to focus on this much of my own ideas and concepts.  I’m so used to working on other peoples projects that spending this much time on my own kinda makes me feel guilty.  Like I should be doing something else.

I’m getting over it though.  I managed to do some good at the same time.  Picked three great artists from DA to appear on the back of Heavy Metal and helped another creator do his first ever creator owned work.  Hopefully he’ll turn his back on X-Men and Hulk to do more creator owned work in the future.

I know, I’ll write a journal and post that.  That’s almost work, right?

*chuckles* actually this reads as my life [on a way small, way, way tinier scale]. i get this feeling of guilt and paranoia maybe once a year, and reading your journal helped realize why. work projects are wrapping up, freelance jobs are being put to bed, and my last business trip was a great success. i've worked long and hard to get to where i am, and now i'm just staring at the screen and blinking. ['go-go-go' just became 'went-went-went', and i'm so used to the speed, slowing down makes me feel...like i'm forgetting something...]

good luck getting the most out of your 'you time'! if nothing else, you can rest assured that a well-kept navel is a happy one~! ^_~

For me I feel that now I have made room in my schedule to do the work for myself I'm getting a little nervous. Usually I just jump in and push forward but now I'm doing it all myself it feels different. It shouldn't but it does. I'm starting to second guess myself a little. Luckily I have some friends to bounce some ideas off. Getting up some good steam now...

Hey Dave!

Just checking, should the 6 finalists have already received notifications they've been chosen? Or Are DA going to announce them soon?

Living so far away I've never had this kind of opportunity, so I'm so keen to go!! Fingers crossed lol

Best

Dan

Thanks for getting back to me Dave! Some nice talent there. My only query is, I was under the impression the artists were not allowed to be published? Please excuse me if I'm mistaken.

To me the importance of this is to get creators from DA a chance to experience the show and to use it to try and do some networking to get themselves to the next level. There are so many publications around the world where an artist can get their work in print but not get paid for it. Many companies offer 'royalties' but they never seem to reach that level where money gets paid out. Sometimes a creator prints a hundred copies of their own work. I don't really consider that to be truly published.

So to me I consider "published" to be artists getting regular or semi-regular paid work for a well known entity.

You make a great point. And I agree with you.

I guess getting printed and not seeing royalties or recognition can be tough. Though getting printed is great to have on a resume, and better than not. Unfortunately I fall in a category where I only get to meet great artists (David Finch, Dave Gibbons, Van Sciver etc) who say I should be published, or 'printed', but never have the opportunity to meet editors. Ah well. I'm sure I'm playing a small violin, and there are plenty of others singing the same song. Best to keep chippng away at it :)

Thanks again!

Best
Daniel

You should know that at least at Marvel they specifically look at DeviantART accounts because they can tell right away if an artist is popular or not. Keep doing what you're doing. Your art is great!

Well I have to say I felt the same way you do as soon as school (and thus my job) ended for the summer. Along with that, my own school finished for the summer so I was out of college assignments too. When you suddenly go from doing everything to nothing it can be a huge rush to you and throw you. It is kind of hard to get out of it, but if you just ignore the annoying voice, or do a bit of other stuff, just a bit, then put the rest of your focus on what you want to do, then it doesn't seem as bad. The annoying voice dies a little and you get some peace and quiet while doing what you want to get done.

I hadn't thought of that but it is just like when my daughters finish the school year and that period of "la-la-la-la-la-la" doing nothing thinking you have all the time in the world, then before you know it, September hits.

Well I'm back to normal today. Work, work, work, read some comics... ;-)

So long as you're doing something to attain a desired goal, it's worthwhile.
I enjoy watching you and would like to see whatever you put out that is your own.

This feeling of "I feel like if IŽll must be doing something else" is a headache, yes. I feel it during all the day, until I came back home at night (from my terrible job) and can sit and draw. But looking at what you have done, I think you really deserve to focus on your personal projects and enjoy it as much as you can. And yeah, "scratch the belly button" is good and necessary sometimes ;)

Thanks mate!!

We all deserve some moments to do what we want. I feel I've been saving mine up for some time now and the desire to use that time all up at once is sometimes overwhelming.

Fingers crossed this work will create more of that "time" to do what I want.

Now back to it.

Best,

- Dave

Enjoy the time you have to work on your own stuff.
And keep reminding yourself how awesome it is to work on something you love.

Keep up the good work!

I do appreciate it and was thinking just now how it is such a luxury to even contemplate the situation when so many others can't. The balance between earning an income and doing what you really want to must be kept or they'll both suffer. Now I'm doing more of what I want I can't forget that the rent, bills and groceries all need to be paid.

Cheers,

- Dave
